Fall migration is in full swing!

No matter where you live, you and your class can participate in this annual event either through direct observation or over the internet via web cameras and migration projects around the world. Migration, especially of neo-tropical birds, can be a great way to connect your home environment with that of a winter feeding ground.

Nutty Birdwatcher Nutty Birdwatcher offers the basics in bird migration. Start with the overview map of North American Flyways to see what birds might be coming to your area, and where they are headed. Then read up on Bird Habitats and Bird Identification. Although Nutty Birdwatcher focuses on Eastern birds, it provides a good template for gathering migration related resources for other parts of the U.S.

The Canadian Peregrine Foundation: Project Track-'em Project Track 'em follows the exploits of four to eight young Peregrine Falcons from Ontario, Quebec, and New York, as they attempt to make their first journeys south this fall. Individual travel diaries for each of the four falcons as well as background information on the project and falcon biology can be accessed from the CPF site.

Journey North: A Global Study of Wildlife Migration Journey North is a science education program that uses the Internet to track migration and signs of spring. Students in classrooms across North America share their own observations of the changing seasons. Resources include a teachers manual, daily updates on migration data and sightings, a teacher discussion group, and an online database of migration sightings.Free Registration Required. Project North is funded by the Annenberg Foundation/Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Project Monarch Watch Going into its ninth year, Project Monarch Watch is an educational outreach program at the University of Kansas. Their goals are: "to further science education, particularly in primary and secondary school systems; to promote the conservation of Monarch butterflies; and to involve thousands of students and adults in a cooperative study of the Monarchs' spectacular fall migration." Resources include a K-9 science curriculum, migration data, conservation links, research articles, and a picture gallery.
